A breaker trips because of an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a ground fault, or, on an AFCI breaker, a detected arc. A breaker that trips repeatedly is a warning, not a nuisance. We diagnose the cause and fix it rather than just swapping the breaker, which doesn't solve the underlying problem.

It can usually be repaired. Aluminum branch wiring was installed in many homes between about 1965 and 1973. The CPSC recognizes two repair methods short of rewiring: COPALUM crimp connectors and AlumiConn connectors, which join a copper pigtail to the aluminum at each outlet, switch and splice. In some homes, rewiring the circuit in copper is the better long-term fix.
