A tripping breaker is a working breaker. The danger is not the tripping — it is what happens if someone keeps resetting it without finding out why.
A breaker that keeps tripping is not broken. It is doing precisely what it was installed to do: cutting power before a circuit gets hot enough to start a fire. The real hazard is the habit of walking to the panel and resetting it again, because that removes the protection without removing the problem. What matters is working out which of four things is happening.
The four causes, and how to tell them apart

If it trips after a few minutes: probably an overload
A 15A circuit gives you about 1,800 watts, and a 20A circuit about 2,400 — and most homes are built with far fewer circuits than the way we now use them assumes. A space heater alone can take 1,500 watts. Add a microwave, a hair dryer or a window unit on the same circuit and it will trip every time.
Try moving the heaviest appliance to a circuit in a different part of the house. If the tripping stops, you have your answer. If your house needs that solved permanently rather than managed around, the fix is a dedicated circuit or, where the panel is already full, a service upgrade.
If it trips the instant you reset it: stop
An immediate trip with nothing plugged in means the fault is in the wiring, not in what you are plugging into it. Leave the breaker off and call. Repeated resetting against a short circuit is how a fault that a breaker was successfully containing becomes an incident.
When the panel itself is the problem
Sometimes the circuit is fine and the equipment is not. Two panel brands come up repeatedly in Dallas-Fort Worth and both have failure modes that make erratic tripping more than a nuisance.
- Federal Pacific Stab-Lok — the known concern is a breaker that may fail to trip on a fault. Arlington's 1960s-1980s housing boom overlaps almost exactly with the years these were installed, and it is the brand we replace most there.
- Zinsco and Sylvania-Zinsco — a breaker can sit in the off position while the bus behind it stays energized, and the aluminum bus degrades where breakers clip on. We find these in Fort Worth more than anywhere else we work.
- Any panel with no space left — a full panel is not just inconvenient. It usually means the service is undersized for how the house is now being used.
Danger signs that change the timeline
- A burning or hot-plastic smell at the panel
- A panel cover, breaker or conductor that is warm to the touch
- Scorch marks, discolouration or melted insulation inside the panel
- Buzzing, crackling or humming from the panel
- A breaker that will not reset at all
- Several breakers tripping across different circuits
Any of those means stop resetting and call the same day. Melted insulation at a termination is a failure that has been developing for a long time — we find it regularly in main panels and in unit panels at multifamily properties — and it does not improve on its own.

Tripping breaker questions
The tripping itself is protective — that is the breaker working. It becomes dangerous when someone keeps resetting it without finding the cause, because that leaves the fault in place with the protection removed. It is also dangerous when it comes with heat, smell, buzzing or scorch marks, which point at the panel or a connection rather than at the load.
Once, to see whether it holds. If it trips again immediately, or trips repeatedly over a day, leave it off and get it looked at. Resetting into a short circuit repeatedly is the specific behaviour that turns a contained fault into a fire.
Yes. Breakers are mechanical and they wear out, particularly ones that have tripped many times. A breaker tripping at random with almost no load is a classic sign. On certain panel brands it is also worth checking whether the panel itself should be replaced rather than the individual breaker.
It depends what is causing it. If the panel is full and the service is undersized for how the house is used, then yes — that is the actual fix. If a single circuit is overloaded, a dedicated circuit is cheaper and solves it properly. We tell you which one it is before quoting, because those are very different numbers.
