Permits & Power in Burleson

Who issues the permit

Electrical permits for work in Burleson are issued by the city, and it is the city that inspects the finished work. Requirements, fees and inspection scheduling differ from one DFW city to the next.

Clements Electric pulls the permit and schedules the inspection as part of the job. Texas Electrical Contractor TECL #40628.

Who owns the wires

Most Burleson addresses are served by Oncor Electric Delivery. Part of the city is served by United Cooperative Services instead — utility territory does not follow city limits.

This matters on a service or panel upgrade: the utility named on your electric bill is the one that has to disconnect and then release the meter before the new service can be energized. Worth checking your bill before scheduling, and we coordinate that call either way.

Solar Panels & a Standby Generator in Burleson

If your Burleson home has grid-tied solar, the solar has to connect on the utility side of the generator’s transfer switch, between the meter and the switch, so the generator can never feed the solar inverters. We explain why in adding a standby generator to a home with solar panels. How that connection is made depends on the utility that serves your address, and more than one serves Burleson: Oncor Electric Delivery or United Cooperative Services. Check the name on your electric bill, because utility territory does not follow city limits.

Oncor Electric Delivery (delivery utility)

  • Disconnect: A visible, lockable, labeled AC disconnect is required between the Oncor meter and every source of distributed generation, within 10 feet of the meter unless special placards are used. Oncor states that molded-case breakers are not an acceptable disconnect.
  • Meter socket: The meter socket is reserved for Oncor metering. No meter collars or other devices may be installed in it or between the meter and the socket.
  • Generator and transfer switch: The generator transfer switch must be installed on the load side of the meter base, never integrated with or in series with the meter. Oncor asks installers to confirm whether the transfer switch is open or closed transition.
  • Solar approval: Solar needs an Oncor interconnection application, and Oncor treats a system as certified when it meets UL 1741 and the applicable parts of IEEE 1547.

United Cooperative Services (electric cooperative)

  • Disconnect: United requires a visible, lockable, lever-grip switch whose on/off position can be seen without opening a door or panel, and states that breakers do not qualify. The location must be acceptable to both the member and United; no distance is published.
  • Meter socket: United requires the main disconnect on the load side of the meter base, and says the meter base should not be used as a raceway between a transfer switch and the breaker panel.
  • Generator and transfer switch: United asks members to notify it before connecting a generator, and requires NEC-compliant transfer equipment installed by a licensed electrician. It also says a member can buy a GenerLink meter-base transfer switch and have United install it, which is unusual among DFW utilities.
  • Solar approval: United charges no solar application fee. The system may be switched on briefly for testing but must stay off until United personnel verify and approve it.
  • Not published by United Cooperative Services: whether a supply-side (line-side) tap is allowed; a UL 1741 inverter requirement (its manual cites IEEE 1547). We confirm these with the utility in writing before the job rather than assume another utility’s rule applies.
