The most common answer is a GFCI outlet somewhere else on the same circuit — often in a garage, bathroom or exterior wall — that has tripped and taken the dead outlet down with it.
If an outlet has stopped working and the breaker panel shows nothing tripped, the most likely explanation is a GFCI outlet somewhere else on the same circuit. GFCIs protect everything downstream of them, so a GFCI in the garage can cut power to outlets in a bathroom, on a patio, or along an exterior wall — and the breaker will look completely normal the whole time. That is the first thing to check and it costs nothing.
Check this first: find every GFCI in the house
A GFCI is an outlet with TEST and RESET buttons on its face. Press RESET firmly on every one you can find. They are usually installed in garages, bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, crawl spaces and on exterior walls — and one GFCI frequently protects outlets in more than one room, which is why the connection is not obvious.
- Garage, including behind stored boxes and above workbenches
- Every bathroom, including one you rarely use
- Kitchen counters, on both sides of the sink
- Laundry room, often behind the machines
- Exterior walls, patios and porches, usually under a weatherproof cover
- Crawl space or basement
If a GFCI will not reset, or resets and immediately trips again, stop. It is doing its job and telling you there is a genuine fault on the circuit. That is a call, not a puzzle to keep working at.
The six real causes, in the order we usually find them
1. A tripped GFCI upstream
By far the most common. Resetting it restores everything downstream at once.
2. A failed receptacle
Outlets are mechanical devices and they wear out, particularly ones that have had a heavy appliance or a space heater plugged into them for years. The internal contacts lose tension and eventually stop making a connection.
3. A loose connection in the box
This is the one worth taking seriously. A backstabbed connection — where the wire is pushed into a hole in the back of the outlet rather than wrapped around the screw terminal — can work loose over time. A loose connection under load generates heat, and heat is how electrical fires start. If a dead outlet is also warm, discoloured, or smells faintly of hot plastic, that is not a repair to schedule for next week.
4. A break further upstream
Outlets are usually daisy-chained. If a connection fails in the middle of the run, everything past it goes dead while everything before it works normally. Tracing that requires testing the circuit, not guessing at it.
5. A breaker that has failed without tripping
Breakers can fail closed or partially fail, so the handle sits in the ON position while the circuit is dead. This is more common in older panels, and it is one of the specific hazards with Federal Pacific Stab-Lok equipment, which we replace more than any other brand in Arlington.
6. Aluminum branch wiring at the terminations
In homes and apartments wired roughly between 1965 and 1973, branch circuits may be aluminum. Aluminum expands, contracts and oxidises differently than copper, so connections at outlets and switches can loosen over decades. We find this most in Grand Prairie and Irving, and throughout multifamily buildings from that era.
What you can safely check yourself
- Reset every GFCI in the house
- Test the outlet with something you know works, such as a lamp
- Check whether a wall switch controls that outlet — half-switched outlets are common in living rooms
- Look at the breaker: some trip to a middle position that is easy to miss, so switch it fully OFF and then fully ON
- Check whether nearby outlets on the same wall are also dead, which tells us where the break is
What we would ask you not to do is take the outlet out of the wall to look behind it. The circuit may still be live even though the outlet is dead, and a partially failed connection is exactly the situation where that is true.
When to stop and call
- The outlet or cover plate is warm to the touch
- Any scorch mark, discolouration or melted plastic
- A burning or hot-plastic smell near the outlet or the panel
- A GFCI that trips again immediately after resetting
- Several outlets dead at once with no tripped breaker
- Buzzing or crackling from the outlet or the panel

Dead outlet questions we get asked
Because most dead outlets are not a breaker problem. The usual cause is a GFCI further up the same circuit that has tripped and cut power to everything downstream, and the breaker has no reason to react to that. The other common causes are a worn-out receptacle or a loose connection in a box somewhere along the run.
Swapping a receptacle looks simple, and that is the risk. If the underlying problem is a loose or overheated connection, a new outlet on the same bad connection fails the same way. If the wiring is aluminum, the replacement has to use connectors rated for aluminum or the new connection is worse than the old one. And the circuit may still be live even though the outlet is dead.
Usually not on its own. It becomes urgent when there is heat, smell or discolouration involved, because those indicate a connection that is failing under load rather than one that has simply opened. Warm cover plate, scorch marks or a hot-plastic smell all mean stop using the circuit and call.
