If you can smell hot plastic or burning near an outlet, a switch or the breaker panel, switch that circuit off at the panel and stop using it. This is the one electrical symptom that should not wait for a convenient appointment. The smell is insulation getting hot enough to break down, which means a connection is overheating under load, and connections that overheat do not recover on their own — they get worse.
What to do in the next five minutes
- Unplug what you can reach safely, without touching anything warm or discoloured
- Switch off the breaker for that circuit. If you cannot identify it and the smell is strong, switch off the main
- Do not use the outlet, switch or circuit again until it has been looked at
- Do not remove the outlet or the panel cover to investigate
- If you see smoke or flame, or the smell is strong and spreading, leave and call 911 first
What causes it
Almost always a connection that is failing under load. Electricity passing through a loose or corroded connection generates heat, the heat degrades the connection further, and the degraded connection then runs hotter still. It is a slow feedback loop that runs for months or years before anything smells.
- A loose termination at an outlet, switch or breaker, often a backstabbed connection that has worked loose
- An overloaded circuit run at capacity for long periods, commonly a space heater or window unit
- Aluminum branch wiring terminated without connectors rated for aluminum
- A failing breaker or a degraded bus, particularly in Zinsco and Federal Pacific equipment
- Water intrusion and corrosion, especially in exterior panels and meter stacks
- A panel or service undersized for the building's current load — very common in multifamily buildings, at both the exterior mains and the unit panels
What melted conductors actually look like
In panels we open across DFW, the tell is discolouration and deformation at the terminations rather than anywhere along the middle of a conductor. Insulation goes brown or black at the lug, the conductor may be visibly deformed, and the surrounding plastic can be softened. In multifamily buildings we find this at the main panels outside feeding several units and at the individual unit panels inside — the same failure, different scope.
It is worth saying plainly: this is not usually the sign of a bad electrician somewhere in the past. It is usually the sign of a building carrying loads that nobody imagined when it was wired, for long enough that the weakest connection gave up first.
What we do about it
- Find the failing connection rather than replacing parts speculatively
- Assess whether it is a termination repair or a genuine capacity problem, because those are very different jobs
- Check the rest of the panel, since a connection that failed is rarely the only one under stress
- Give you a written flat-rate quote before any work, with the scope in plain language
- Pull the permit and schedule the inspection where the work requires it

No. The smell stops when the load stops — plug the same appliance back in and the connection heats up again. A connection that has already overheated is degraded, and it will fail faster the next time, not slower.
A cover plate can feel slightly warm when a large appliance has been running through it for a long time. It should never feel hot, and it should never be discoloured, softened or smell of anything. Warm plus any discolouration is a call.
Please do not. A new outlet on a damaged connection fails the same way, usually faster, because the conductor and the box may also be heat-damaged. The circuit may still be live, and if the wiring is aluminum the replacement needs connectors rated for it. This is the specific case where a swap makes things worse while looking fixed.
