Clements Electric installs Cummins whole-house standby generators in Grand Prairie, and our shop is in Grand Prairie, at 2100 S Great SW Pkwy #505. A typical complete 20 kW installation is estimated at $13,500–$17,000 all in. Estimate only. Every installation is different; a site visit is required to determine whether your installation will cost less or more than this estimate. The company that sells you the generator is the company that installs it: Clements Electric is an assumed name of UTS ElectricPros, LLC, an authorized Cummins dealer, working under Texas Electrical Contractor license TECL #40628.

Who sells and who installs the generator?

One company does both. UTS ElectricPros, LLC sells Cummins standby generators as an authorized dealer (utselectricpros.com), and Clements Electric is that same company's name for its installation and service work. There is no hand-off between a seller and a separate installer, and the license on the permit is the same license on the sale. If there is a problem with our workmanship, we come back and fix it at no charge.

We sell Cummins only. The air-cooled Quiet Connect range is the RS13A, RS17A and RS20A. Above 20 kW the Cummins range is liquid-cooled, starting with the RS25, and those are quoted after a survey.

What does generator installation cost in Grand Prairie?

These are the same installed estimates we publish for all of Dallas-Fort Worth. Grand Prairie does not have its own price list. Each band is all in and is an estimate: the written quote follows an on-site survey, because the gas service, the panel and the distance from the generator to the panel differ from house to house.

RS13A, 13 kWEssential circuits$11,000–$14,000
RS17A, 17 kWWhole home with one AC$12,500–$15,500
RS20A, 20 kWTypical complete whole-house install$13,500–$17,000

What moves a job within its band:

  • The gas supply. Cummins lists minimum and maximum supply pressures for natural gas and propane on the RS20A spec sheet, so the existing meter and line have to be checked against the unit. A licensed plumber runs the gas line, and you are welcome to hire your own.
  • The transfer switch. A service-entrance-rated automatic transfer switch has to match the service. Cummins packages the RS20AC with a 200 A service-entrance-rated ATS. A 400 A service needs a switch rated for it.
  • Where the unit sits. Cummins says the Quiet Connect range meets NFPA 37, which allows installation 18 inches from a building. Distance to the panel and the gas line sets the length of the runs.
  • The panel. An old or full panel may need work before a transfer switch can go in. See panel upgrades.

Sizing is covered in how to size a standby generator and what size generator for 200-amp service. The full price breakdown is in whole-house generator cost in Texas.

Do I need a permit for a generator in Grand Prairie?

Expect the city to be involved, and expect state law to limit how. Grand Prairie's residential permits page says "All electrical work requires an approved permit by the Building Inspections Division," and it lists "Generator, ESS" as examples under its Residential Miscellaneous permit. Applications go through the city's online Customer Self-Service portal. The city says electrical permits are processed in approximately 5 to 10 business days, and its miscellaneous permit page gives review times of 5 to 14 business days depending on the project. Building Inspections is at City Hall, 300 W. Main Street, (972) 237-8230.

Two Texas laws that took effect September 1, 2025 change what a city can require for a home generator:

  • Local Government Code §229.102, added by SB 1252, says a municipality "may not adopt or enforce an ordinance, rule, or other measure that would regulate the installation or inspection of a residential energy backup system." It defines that as a backup system at a residence that provides no more than 50 kilowatts, or stores no more than 100 kilowatt hours. Every Cummins air-cooled home unit is under 50 kW. The section does not limit a municipally owned utility's authority, which does not apply in Grand Prairie: the city is Oncor territory.
  • Local Government Code §247.0025, added by SB 1202, lets a qualified third party, such as a licensed master electrician or an electrical inspector, do the plan review and inspection for a home backup power installation instead of the city. The reviewer cannot be the installer. We explain the details in Texas SB 1202 and generator permits.

Neither law takes the utility or the gas line out of the picture. Mansfield's SB 1202 page says separate city electrical and plumbing permits are still required for any electric or gas service release, and it excludes service and panel upgrades from SB 1202. Houston's permitting center says that under SB 1252 it inspects only the electrical service connection and the fuel gas piping, not the generator itself. Grand Prairie's permit pages, as of October 9, 2026, still list generators under the miscellaneous permit and do not say how the city applies either law. We confirm the current process with Building Inspections before we quote, and we file whatever it requires.

What happens on installation day?

  1. Survey and written quote: the panel, the service size, the gas meter and the spot for the unit.
  2. Permits, or the SB 1202 route if it fits the job, filed before work starts.
  3. The pad and the unit set at the clearance Cummins and the code allow.
  4. The automatic transfer switch installed. On Oncor service, the transfer switch goes on the load side of the meter base.
  5. The gas line run and connected by a licensed plumber.
  6. Inspection and service release, then startup and a walk-through of the controller and exercise schedule.

Cummins gives the air-cooled range a base warranty of 5 years or 2,000 hours (Cummins Quiet Connect spec sheet). Our office hours are 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Friday. We are closed weekends and take weekend emergency calls at (817) 803-4444.

Clements Electric, from its shop at 2100 S Great SW Pkwy #505 in Grand Prairie. Clements Electric is an assumed name of UTS ElectricPros, LLC, an authorized Cummins dealer, so the company that sells the generator also installs it under Texas Electrical Contractor license TECL #40628.

Grand Prairie's residential permits page says all electrical work requires a permit and lists generators under its Residential Miscellaneous permit, applied for through the city's Customer Self-Service portal. Since September 1, 2025, Local Government Code §229.102 bars cities from regulating the installation or inspection of residential backup systems of 50 kW or less, and SB 1202 allows third-party review and inspection. The utility service release and gas work still have their own steps. We confirm the current process with Grand Prairie Building Inspections before quoting.

Cummins says its Quiet Connect air-cooled generators meet NFPA 37, which allows them to be installed 18 inches from a building. Windows, vents, the gas meter and the property line can also limit the spot, so we pick it during the site survey.

A licensed plumber runs and connects the gas line. We coordinate it as part of the job, and you are welcome to hire your own plumber.
