Where the Code Requires GFCI Protection
NEC Section 210.8 requires GFCI protection for home receptacles in bathrooms, garages, outdoors, kitchens, laundry areas and near sinks, among other places. The 2023 edition extended kitchen protection to every kitchen receptacle, not only those serving the countertop. And when an outlet is replaced in a spot that now requires GFCI protection, the replacement has to be GFCI-protected (NEC 406.4(D)(3)).
Replacing Two-Prong Outlets
The NEC gives three options for a two-prong outlet with no ground: replace it with another two-prong outlet; replace it with a GFCI outlet, or a GFCI-protected three-prong outlet, labeled "No Equipment Ground"; or run a ground and install a grounded three-prong outlet (NEC 406.4(D)(2)).
