Fort Worth Permits and Inspections
Fort Worth's building codes page says the city adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective September 1, 2026, so a panel replacement there is inspected to that edition. Electrical permits are applied for online through Accela Citizen Access, and the city's electrical permit application asks for the contractor's registration number, the service size and whether an electrical release is needed; it lists the inspection request line as 817-392-6370. The city's homestead affidavit says homeowners may not work on the service themselves. Since the 2020 edition, NEC Section 230.67 has required a Type 1 or Type 2 surge-protective device on a dwelling's service, including when the service equipment is replaced (Leviton). Oncor's Part
On Oncor service, Oncor owns the meter. Its Electric Service Guidelines say only qualified electrical workers may remove meter seals, that the electrician must call Oncor before pulling a meter, and that removing one without authorization results in a charge to the customer. Electricians request temporary disconnects and reconnects through Oncor's Electrician Connect portal. We request the disconnect and reconnect as part of the job; whether Oncor's own equipment has to change, and when, is Oncor's decision.
When 200 Amps Isn't Enough
Large homes, or homes adding several big loads at once such as an EV charger, a pool and a shop, may need 400-amp service. That is quoted after an on-site load calculation.
